SNARE PATROL DOUBLED UP FRIDAY 12/5/17

Due to the cable snare found on the side of the road next to the flattened bush area, near the Baobab Ext turn off, see –
ALERT - POSSIBLE SNARED ELEPHANT - KARIBA ANIMAL WELFARE FUND TRUST 11/5/17
Parks availed 3 extra Rangers so 2 teams were on the ground.

One team to sweep the above area - the gully from the dump, across the main tar road following the gully along side of baobab through Batonga. The other team continued on as normal with the area designated for the Friday Sweep

One of the patrols is shown the area of the incident, which would be snare swept  the next day
The Patrol recovered 4 wires snares (for Bush buck, Water Buck, Kudu etc.) in the short area from the dump site to the main tar road.

Across the main tar road to the above area, within 2 mtrs of where the Ele was caught in the cable snare 3 days prior, they recovered a further 8 heavy cable snares.

8 heavy cable snares recovered along the gully where the Ele caught in a snare flattened the bush area. Near the Baobab Ext turn off

The 2 Patrol teams with their days findings.
Total  22 snares
4 wire + 8 heavy cable snares from the above area
10 wire snares from the Baobab area

WELL DONE to these 2 teams !!
If anyone has any information on the persons that are laying these snares, please contact any of the below numbers.

MUNICIPAL DUMP SITE ELECTRIC FENCE

The fence is up !!! some minor neatening of bits – like where the Buffalo came in when it was ¾ up and busted out the other side over a period of 2 days !!
A final 4 rolls were required to finish up.

THANK YOU ….
Barrier Tech who had none of the mesh required, left in stock on the Friday and immediately set about organizing the extra rolls
GIZ for again picking up the tab for these 4 rolls
Swift for again donating the transport, being so efficient and collecting the rolls on the Monday morning in haste for us to finish off before more damage was done from animals inside the fence.
We are to still sort as below
#  Need to get another roll of mesh in the near future for incase
#   We anticipate a number of Ele busts – just cos they can !! and because they have been walking through their paths there for generations.
So spare materials needed and to be held for this as the fence must be maintained and kept up to what it was on completion.
#  Needing to put up a further 2 electric strands in the middle of the fence as the 3 at the top will not be adequate

Once we have gone through the list from Municipality, of what remains after completion, reconcile the cost we have paid on labour, cement,
extra poles etc. – it took twice as long as anticipated……… we will add in extra strands, particularly in the hot spots where the Ele paths are.

We are also anticipating putting at least a meter wide strip of shade cloth on the inside of the fence, this has proven in other areas to create another barrier for the Eles in that they don’t like where they cannot see and also changes the view of previous visits made, creating a false view to the Ele
There is always the exception and an angry or determined Elephant WILL go where he wants

4 extra rolls being collect from Swift and delivered to the dump site – see the gates are up !!

Fence going up

Three quarters of the fence done

African proverb -  If you think you are too small to make a difference, you have never spent the night with a mosquito

The last of some of the Wildlife that will no longer be routinely feeding ON OUR TOXIC WASTE

Our larger resident Buff herd crossing on the Tamarind/Cutty sark rd.– one of their routine paths and where snares are set !!.
Distressingly, whilst the fence is going up for the good of the animals, it has thrown them in disarray as they follow their age old paths, to find this monstrosity blocking their way.  The Buff herd were in confusion for a few days as they found their way around the fence and continued on their route.

BIG THANK YOU’S again  To all that contributed to this in every way. Materials, labour, donations and general support, as well as the main Stakeholders that played a big part initially and during the course of erecting the fence.
Now to keep it maintained !!!
